Closet
When the word closet comes up in conversation, some people think of tiny rooms that hold nothing more than wardrobes and junk. Others see opportunities for creating fantastic systems of organizations.
The truth is a closet can serve both purposes very well and a whole host of others in between. Even for the less-than-organized, a good closet can provide a place to store a variety of things in a fairly neat manner, but getting started is the tricky part. No matter the size of the space, there's really no reason why that "tiny room" can't be turned into something spectacular.
If putting a closet in order is on tap, there are some logical steps that should be followed. Let's take a look at each and see what suggestions organizational wizards have to offer.
Cleaning out
This is the very first thing that should be done if a closet organization job at hand. This means removing absolutely everything and storing it in another location as the next steps are considered and brought into play. Yes, your house will be a mess during this process, but the results should be worth the inconvenience.
Weeding out
This is the hard part for most people. Getting rid of things that have been sitting in a closet for years can be difficult, but it's an absolute must. Whether it's clothes, toys or just knick-knacks, go through the items one by one and decide what stays and what goes. If you haven't used something in more than a year and likely won't during the next 12 months, get rid of it.
Examine the space
Now that the cluttered old closet has been emptied and its contents have been evaluated, it's time to decide the best set up for organizing the items that will go back in. If, for example, the area will still be dedicated to clothing, but also sporting equipment, linens or so on, a diverse system might be in order. Think small rods for the clothes and maybe a shelving or drawer system for the other items.
Measure and build
Once a basic plan is in place for the closet, it's time to measure the space and build and/or buy the system that best fits it and your needs. Take your time on this part and make sure you measure twice and cut once!
A good closet organization system can really help keep a house in order and make finding things much more simple. When a little time and effort goes into the prospect, there's no reason that even a small closet can't work wonders.
